Supporting the Community

Take-back, Give Back Battery Recycling Program

Radio Warehouse understands that supporting the community involves taking steps towards protecting one of our most vital assets – the environment. Along with offering cleaner and newer battery technology, Radio Warehouse has recently launched a battery recycling program called, "Take-Back Give-Back".

Participation in the program is easy. When you purchase batteries from Radio Warehouse they will be sent in a reusuable bag which you will use to store your batteries once they reach their end-of-life. When you collect ten or more batteries, return them to us and we will rebate you $1 for every battery. This money can either be credited to your next order or you can choose to have this amount donated to Clean Up Australia or Planet Ark. Both organisations inspire and work with Australian communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.

"Take-Back Give-Back"... It's a two-way thing!"

FAQ

FAQ:

Why recycle batteries?

While  batteries can be used up to about 1000 times making them a cost-effective and environmentally better alternative to single use batteries, rechargeable batteries are still a hazardous waste, which can be damaging to the environment and human health if not disposed of correctly. Fortunately, batteries are one form of hazardous waste that are relatively easy to recycle.

What types of batteries does Radio Warehouse sell?

As part of our commitment to the environment, Radio Warehouse does not sell Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries. NiCd batteries contain cadmium, a toxic heavy metal that can cause substantial pollution when sent to landfill. Instead, Radio Warehouse offers Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery technology, which are an environmentally better alternative and will actually deliver greater capacity by size & weight than older, toxic NiCd batteries.  We have these new and cleaner technology batteries to suit most professional two-way radio brands.

What types of batteries does Radio Warehouse's "Take-back, Give Back" battery recycling program accept?

Currently Radio Warehouse will only accept NiMH and Li-ion rechargeable batteries which have been purchased directly from Radio Warehouse as part of its program.

However, if you are not a Radio Warehouse customer and/or you have NiMH, Li-ion or even NiCd batteries that need to be recycled, visit Planet Ark's Recycling Near You website to find your nearest recycling depot.

How are the batteries recycled?

Radio Warehouse works with local council and Australian recycling companies to safely recycle its end-of-life batteries.

The batteries are recycled through MRI (Aust) Pty Ltd, an Australian recycling company who is ISO 14001 and EPA accredited.  At MRI (Aust) Pty Ltd, batteries are broken down and processed to extract raw materials which are used to produce new products. Through MRI's services,  98-100% of battery parts are prevented from going to landfill.

What are the batteries turned into once they are recycled?
Batteries are stripped and processed into raw materials to make new products. For example, the alkaline solution in the battery is processed and later used in industrial solvents and cleaning products. Currently, there are no battery manufactures in Australia, so some parts are recycled and used overseas to prevent them from going to landfill.
Does it cost anything to participate in Radio Warehouse's "Take-back, Give back" battery recycling program?
Simply put, no. When you purchase batteries from Radio Warehouse they will be sent in a bag which you will use to store your batteries once they reach their end-of-life. When you collect ten batteries or more, return them to us and we will rebate you $1 for every battery. This money can either be credited to your next order or donated to Planet Ark or Clean Up Australia.

Clean Up Australia logo

Clean Up Australia works with the community, government and business to provide practical solutions to help us all live more sustainably every day of the year.

In 1989, an 'average Australian bloke' had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard - Sydney Harbour. This simple idea has now become the nation's largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day.

In the past 20 years, Australians have devoted more than 24 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 200,000 tonnes of rubbish.

Radio Warehouse proudly encourages individuals and businesses to support Clean Up Australia.
